# Commercial Photography

Commercial photography is photography made to do a job for a business: sell a product, win a tender, explain a process, introduce a leadership team, fill a catalogue. The brief is commercial rather than personal, the images are licensed for business use, and the work is judged on whether the business outcome improves. ColoursAlive has produced commercial photography in Chennai since 2007, from a dedicated studio in Pallikaranai and on location across India.

Businesses arriving here usually know they need professional images and are less certain which kind. Commercial photography is an umbrella covering several distinct disciplines, each with its own techniques, timelines and costs: advertising and campaign imagery, catalogue and marketplace photography, corporate portraits and workplace coverage, and industrial and facility documentation. Most briefs combine two or three of them.

A single supplier across those disciplines is worth more than the sum of the individual shoots. One photographer who knows a brand's colour, lighting and file standards produces a catalogue set, a campaign image and a leadership portrait that look like they belong to the same company, which is exactly what a website, a brochure and an investor deck need them to do.

## What this covers

* **Advertising & Campaign** - Hero images built to sell. Creative lighting, styling and retouching for campaigns, OOH and brand launches.
* **Catalogue & Marketplace** - High-volume, consistent packshots for listings, price lists and catalogues.
* **Corporate & People** - Headshots, leadership portraits, team and workplace photography for websites and reports.
* **Industrial & Facilities** - Plants, production lines, machinery and people at work, photographed in live operations.

## Why ColoursAlive

* **One supplier, one visual standard.** Brands that split commercial photography across several vendors end up with a website, a catalogue and an annual report that look like three different companies. We keep lighting notes and file standards per brand, so every new batch matches the last, whether the subject is a product on white, a plant manager on a shop floor, or a campaign hero.
* **Two decades of commercial briefs.** ColoursAlive has operated as a commercial studio in Chennai since September 2007. Principal photographer Susheel Chandradhas has been shooting commercial photography and video since 2003, in the years before the studio was founded, across advertising, high-volume eCommerce catalogues, corporate portraiture and industrial documentation.
* **Studio and location, both fully equipped.** Our main shooting floor at Fortune Studios, Pallikaranai is 36ft × 24ft × 12.5ft with an 8ft × 4ft service door, seamless backgrounds and a second studio for staging. When the subject cannot travel, we do: location commercial photography runs across Chennai, Tamil Nadu and pan-India.
* **Business paperwork that works.** GST-registered with proper GST invoices on every project, clear commercial usage rights included in the quote, and written scopes that say what is being delivered before anyone commits budget.
* **Stills and film from one commission.** We produce commercial video alongside photography. Booking both together means one brief, one crew, one set of access arrangements, and two sets of deliverables that share a visual language.

## Commercial photography, discipline by discipline

Commercial photography splits into disciplines that look similar from outside and behave very differently in practice. Choosing the right one is the difference between imagery that earns its cost and imagery that merely exists.

Advertising and campaign photography is the creative end. The purpose is persuasion, so the image is built rather than recorded: lighting designed for drama, styling planned around a concept, and retouching that finishes the idea. Output is low and value is high, since a single campaign frame may run on hoardings, in print and across a launch. Read more on the [product photography page](https://www.coloursalive.com/photography-services/product-photography/).

Catalogue and marketplace photography is the volume end, and the purpose is accuracy rather than persuasion. A listing image stands in for physically handling the product, so colour must be true, backgrounds consistent and marketplace specifications met exactly. Per-image cost falls sharply with quantity, which is why catalogue work is planned as a batch. The [eCommerce photography page](https://www.coloursalive.com/photography-services/ecommerce-photography/) covers listing requirements in detail.

Corporate and people photography covers headshots, leadership portraits, team pictures and workplace coverage. The technical demands are modest and the human demands are not: most executives dislike being photographed, and a usable portrait depends on the photographer being quick, calm and decisive on a schedule that rarely allows a second attempt. See the [corporate photography page](https://www.coloursalive.com/photography-services/corporate-photography/).

Industrial and facility photography is location work carried out inside live operations, where machinery cannot be moved, production cannot pause and safety rules decide where a tripod stands. Mixed factory lighting has to be controlled and colour-managed across sodium, LED and daylight in a single frame. Details sit on the [industrial photography page](https://www.coloursalive.com/photography-services/industrial-photography/).

Most real commercial briefs draw on more than one of these. A manufacturer launching a product typically needs campaign frames for the launch, clean packshots for the catalogue, facility images for the tender document, and portraits for the about page. Planning those together, from one shot list, is both cheaper and more coherent than commissioning four separate jobs across a year.

## How it works

1. **Brief & Scope.** We establish what the images are for, where they will appear, and which commercial photography disciplines the brief actually needs. Scope, shot list and budget are agreed in writing before anything is booked.
2. **Planning.** Studio or location is decided, dates are set around your schedule, and preparation is confirmed: products delivered, people booked, site access and safety arranged.
3. **The Shoot.** Tethered capture so your team can review frames live, on screen, as the shoot progresses. Approvals happen on the day rather than a week later.
4. **Post & Delivery.** Colour-managed processing, retouching, clipping paths and marketplace-spec versions where relevant. Standard turnaround is 7–14 days, with express options for launch deadlines.

## Deliverables

* **Resolution:** High-resolution processed files (Minimum 6000×4000px, ready for print, web and large-format display)
* **Formats:** JPEG and TIFF (PNG, PSD and marketplace-spec versions on request)
* **Retouching:** Full post-production included (Colour correction, clipping paths, blemish removal, compositing where the brief needs it)
* **Turnaround:** 7–14 days standard (Express delivery available for time-sensitive campaigns and launches)

* **Invoicing:** GST invoice on every project (GST-registered; written scope issued before work begins)

## Common questions

**What is commercial photography?**

Commercial photography is photography produced for business use rather than personal use: advertising campaigns, product catalogues, corporate portraits, facility documentation and similar. The images are licensed for commercial purposes, and the brief is judged on a business outcome rather than on personal taste.

**What is the difference between commercial photography and product photography?**

Product photography is one discipline inside commercial photography. Commercial photography also covers corporate and people photography, industrial and facility work, and advertising imagery that may have no product in frame at all. A brief that only needs products photographed is a product photography brief; a brief that needs products, people and premises is a commercial photography brief.

**Do you work on location or only in the studio?**

Both. Studio work happens at our Pallikaranai shooting floor, which takes subjects up to the size of a three-wheeled vehicle through an 8ft × 4ft service door. Location commercial photography runs across Chennai and Tamil Nadu, and we travel pan-India for multi-site briefs.

**How much does commercial photography cost in Chennai?**

Cost depends on the discipline, the number of images, the complexity of lighting and styling, and the post-production required. A high-volume catalogue batch and a single advertising hero sit at opposite ends of the same rate structure. Send us the brief and we will come back with a clear written quote, usually within a working day.

**Can one shoot cover several kinds of images?**

Yes, and combining them is usually the better plan. A coordinated shot list can produce campaign frames, catalogue packshots and team portraits from a single session, which costs less than three separate commissions and keeps the images visually consistent.

**What usage rights do we get?**

Full commercial usage rights for your intended business use are included and stated in the quote, covering print, web, social, marketplace listings and large-format display.

**Do you provide video as well?**

Yes. We produce corporate films, product videos and industrial films in-house, and booking stills and film as one production shares the planning, the access and much of the cost.
