Cosmetics are deceptively difficult to photograph. The products are small, but their packaging combines nearly every hard surface in product photography at once: curved glass that reflects the whole room, metallic foil lettering that goes black the moment light hits it wrong, glossy plastic pumps, frosted acrylic, mirrored compacts. And unlike most categories, the colour inside the packaging is the product. Get a foundation shade or a lipstick tone wrong in the photograph and the customer’s order comes back.
If you run a beauty, skincare or personal care brand and are looking for cosmetic product photography in Chennai, here is what the work actually involves, so you can brief any studio well, including ours.
The packaging problem
A glass serum bottle is a lens and a mirror at the same time. Photograph it casually and it shows the studio, the lights, the photographer, and a distorted window somewhere in its curves. Producing the clean, luxurious look you see in good beauty imagery means constructing every reflection deliberately: large soft gradients placed exactly where they describe the bottle’s shape, dark flags carving the edges so the glass reads as glass. This is built per product, not per catalogue, which is why reflective and transparent products are priced differently from simple SKUs.
Metallic details compound this. Foil-stamped logos and anodised caps only look metallic when something bright is reflecting in them. It is slow, deliberate lighting work, and it is the visible difference between a premium listing and a catalogue snapshot.
Shade accuracy is a returns problem
For makeup especially, colour is not cosmetic to the photograph; it is the purchase decision. A foundation range where shade 03 photographs like shade 05 generates returns, and marketplace return rates feed back into how your listings rank. Our workflow is colour-managed end to end, from calibrated capture on set to a calibrated edit, precisely because accurate colour is what keeps sold products sold. For shade-critical ranges we photograph swatches under identical, repeatable lighting so the relationship between shades is preserved across the whole line.
Texture sells what the jar hides
Beauty buyers want to see the product, not just the packaging: the swirl of a cream, a serum drop, a powder crush, a lipstick bullet’s finish. These texture and swatch shots are macro work with styling, and they do a disproportionate amount of selling on product detail pages and social. They are also efficient to add to a packshot session if they are planned from the start, which is exactly the kind of thing to say when you brief a studio.
Marketplace and channel requirements
Cosmetics sell across Amazon, Nykaa, Flipkart, quick-commerce apps and brand storefronts, each with its own image specifications. The main listing image still follows the standard rules, pure white background and a frame-filling product, which we covered in detail in our Amazon product photography guide. Secondary slots are where cosmetics brands win: texture shots, shade charts, ingredient callouts and lifestyle frames. We deliver one session in every format each channel needs, organised by SKU, as part of our eCommerce photography service.
What a cosmetics shoot looks like at our studio
Products arrive at our Pallikaranai studio a day or two ahead, are logged against your SKU list, and get more prep time than most categories: fingerprints, dust and micro-scratches that are invisible in hand become obvious at macro scale on glossy packaging. We shoot tethered, reviewing every frame at full resolution on a calibrated monitor, so shade relationships and reflections are approved during the session rather than discovered after it. Retouching finishes what lighting starts, cleaning surfaces and cutting backgrounds without the plastic-looking over-retouching that makes beauty products feel untrustworthy.
Courier workflows are standard for this category, so brands anywhere in India can work with us, though Chennai brands are welcome to attend the shoot and approve shades in person, which for a first catalogue is genuinely worth the trip.
If you have a beauty or skincare range that needs photographing, message +91 99624 28747 on WhatsApp with your SKU count and a couple of phone photos of the products. You will usually have a quote the same day. Full scope and deliverables are on our cosmetic photography page.
