People searching for a product photography studio in Chennai usually want answers to three unglamorous questions. Is it a real professional space or someone’s spare room? Can it physically handle my products? And what will actually happen to them there? Fair questions. Here is a straight walkthrough.
The Studio Space
Our main shooting floor is in Pallikaranai: 36 feet by 24 feet with a 12.5 foot ceiling, black and white seamless concrete backgrounds, and an 8 by 4 foot service door. That last detail matters more than it sounds. It means motorcycles, bicycles, appliances and furniture roll straight onto the set rather than being disassembled in a corridor. Between jewellery at one end of the scale and three-wheeled vehicles at the other, we have shot both, in that studio.
A second, smaller studio which usually handles portraits and small product shoots, can handle staging, prep and overflow when needed, which keeps large multi-day catalogue shoots moving: one set being shot while the next batch of SKUs is prepped and cleaned.
The space is large and it is built for work. If you visit expecting a showroom you will be underwhelmed; if you visit expecting a production floor where products get photographed properly, it will make sense immediately.
What happens when your products arrive at the studio
Products usually reach us a day or two before the shoot, by courier or by car. Everything is logged against your SKU list at intake, inspected, and flagged if a sample arrives damaged, because finding that out before shoot day protects your timeline. Then prep: cleaning, de-dusting, steaming fabrics, removing fingerprints from anything glossy. Dust that takes two seconds to wipe on set takes twenty minutes to retouch across forty images.
On shoot day, the set is built for your product, not the other way around. A standing white-background set runs like a production line for catalogue volume. Reflective and glass products get their own constructed lighting environment, which is slower and is the reason they are priced differently.
The part clients find most valuable - Monitoring the Shoot, and Colour Calibrated Workflows
We shoot tethered - the camera is connected to a computer. Every frame lands on the computer, at full resolution, on a colour-calibrated 27 inch 4K monitor within a second of being taken. If you are in the room, you can see and approve angles and framing as they happen. If you are not, we send selects for approval at defined checkpoints. Either way, nothing is discovered after the fact; by the time the last SKU is shot, the shoot has already been reviewed at full size - if you so wish.
Colour is managed end to end, from calibrated capture through a calibrated edit, because for eCommerce work colour accuracy is a returns problem, not an aesthetics preference or ‘good-to-have option’. Everything is captured in lossless RAW, and finals are delivered as high-resolution JPEG and TIFF (with transparent PNG and webP as options), organised and named by SKU, eCommerce marketplace-ready images.
About the photography equipment
Here is something two decades of commercial work teaches you: past a professional baseline, the equipment list stops being the differentiator. Our standing kit is deliberately simple. Sony full-frame bodies, currently an A7 V. A 100mm G Master macro for detail and jewellery work, where it resolves texture your customers can almost feel. A 20-70mm for context and larger products. Godox strobes, shaped through the modifiers each product demands. The tethered workstation, a 16 inch MacBook Pro (with 36GB of RAM, and M3 Pro Processor) driving that calibrated 4K display.
Every piece of equipment we use as a functional aspect to it, and nothing is on set to impress visitors. The images in our portfolio were made with exactly this kit (or previous versions of this kit), so you get what you expect … or better.
Where we are, and who we work with
The ColoursAlive studio is in Pallikaranai, in South Chennai, with easy access from Velachery, OMR, Tambaram, Medavakkam, and the IT corridor. Client visits are by appointment, and if you are choosing between studios we would genuinely encourage you to visit shortlisted ones; it is the fastest way to tell a professional operation from a portfolio website.
A lot of our catalogue work arrives by courier from across India, so distance is no barrier. But if you are nearby, come see your products being shot. Watching your catalogue take shape on the big monitor, angle by angle, is the best version of this service.
