Electronics look simple to photograph and are anything but. The category’s signature materials, glossy black plastic, brushed aluminium, glass screens, are all surfaces that punish casual lighting. And the details buyers zoom into before purchasing, ports, buttons, hinges, textures, demand macro precision that phone photography cannot fake.
Electronics and gadgets have been part of our commercial work for two decades, and they now have a dedicated service of their own at our Chennai studio. Here are the problems that define the category, and how professional work solves them.
The screen problem
A powered-off screen is a black mirror that reflects the entire studio. A powered-on screen photographed naively produces moiré patterns, banding and blown highlights, and its brightness rarely balances with the lighting on the device body. The professional solution is usually compositing: the device is lit and photographed for its body, the screen content is captured separately or dropped in cleanly in post, and the final image shows both perfectly. If a studio you are evaluating has never composited a screen, their portfolio will show it: dim greyish displays, visible reflections, or suspiciously dark rooms.
Glossy black is a shape you have to draw
A glossy black speaker or console photographed with ordinary lighting simply disappears into the background: no edges, no form, a silhouette. The object only becomes visible through what reflects in it, so the photographer has to draw its shape with placed highlights, long soft reflections that run along its edges and describe its curves. It is the same discipline as photographing glass, and it is why complex surfaces carry a surcharge in most professional quotes, ours included.
Detail is the purchase decision
Electronics buyers zoom. They check the port selection, the hinge, the texture of a keyboard, the mesh of a speaker grille. These macro detail shots do serious work in a listing’s secondary slots, and they need real macro optics and focus technique; depth of field at that distance is measured in millimetres, and deep product details often require focus stacking to render sharply front to back. We shoot detail work on a dedicated 100mm macro lens and stack focus where the product demands it.
For brands with technical audiences, exploded-view and component photography takes this further, showing the engineering inside the housing. It is a speciality of ours and consistently earns its place in manuals, listings and launch decks.
Consistency across a product line
Electronics brands rarely shoot one device. They shoot a line: three variants, four colourways, this year’s model beside last year’s accessories. The catalogue only looks like a brand when every image shares identical framing, lighting logic and colour treatment, which is a workflow problem as much as a photography problem. Our eCommerce photography service is built around exactly this: standing sets, tethered review at full resolution, and delivery organised by SKU in every format each marketplace requires, per the platform rules we covered in the Amazon guide.
Colour and finish accuracy
“Midnight Blue” and “Graphite” must be distinguishable in the photographs, and both must match the device in the box. Our colour-managed pipeline, calibrated from capture through edit, exists for shade-critical categories like this. Brushed metal finishes have direction; anodised colours shift under bad lighting. These are solved problems in a controlled studio and unsolvable ones in a hurried corner-office shoot.
Working with us
Devices arrive at our Pallikaranai studio by courier or in person, are logged against your SKU list, and are handled with the care expensive hardware and pre-launch samples deserve; confidentiality agreements are no obstacle. You can review tethered in person, or approve selects remotely at checkpoints. If you are still shortlisting studios, our guide to choosing a product photographer in Chennai lists the questions worth asking, and our studio walkthrough shows the space your devices would be photographed in.
For a quote, message +91 99624 28747 on WhatsApp with your device list and where the images will be used. You will usually have a number the same day. Full details are on our electronics photography page.
